Methods of Applying Coating Powders

Electrostatic Spray Coating Powder

Electrostatic Spraying of Epoxy Coating Powder

Coating powders can be applied using an electrostatic gun. In these cases, the powder is positively charged and the part being coated is negatively charged. This allows a thin, uniform coating to be applied to the part.

The advantage of this approach is that the powder can be wiped off and reapplied if the coating is not correct or if the masking was done incorrectly. Since the coating powder is only attached by a static charge before curing, it can be removed and reapplied. The thickness of the coating can also be adjusted based on the application process.

Once the part is electrostatically coated, it is moved to an oven where the coating powder is cured in place, leaving a smooth and uniform coating over the part.

Electrostatic Fluidized Bed Application of Coating Powder

Applying coating powder using an electrostatic fluidized bed is a practical way to apply a uniform powder coating on motor iron armatures.

Similar to electrostatic spray application, the part and powder are charged. The powder is applied as the parts move on a rotating screw over the fluidized bed. The powder adheres to the motor armature through static electricity. As the parts roll past the fluidized bed, a brush removes coating powder from areas where it is not wanted.

Once the excess coating powder has been removed, the parts are rolled over an induction cure copper element where the motor armatures can be exposed to temperatures of up to 240°C for a few seconds to fix and cure the coating powder in place.

Conformal Coatings

Conformal coatings are thin protective polymer films applied over printed circuit boards, electronic assemblies and components. The coating follows the contours of the assembly while helping protect sensitive electronics from moisture, dust, chemicals and other environmental conditions.

Krayden offers several conformal coating chemistries including acrylic, silicone, urethane, synthetic rubber and UV-curable systems. The right chemistry depends on the environment the assembly will experience as well as the required flexibility, temperature resistance, cure method and manufacturing process.

Acrylic

Versatile conformal coatings commonly used for electronics protection and straightforward application, cure and rework.

Silicone

Flexible protective coatings suited to applications requiring temperature resistance and environmental protection.

Urethane & Synthetic Rubber

Protective coating systems used where moisture resistance, flexibility and environmental protection are important.

UV-Curable

Rapid-curing systems designed to support higher-throughput electronics manufacturing and automated production.

Common Conformal Coating Application Methods

Conformal coatings can be applied in several ways depending on the coating chemistry, assembly design, production volume and required film thickness. Always follow the application and cure recommendations for the specific product being used.

Application Method How It Is Used Process Considerations
Spray Coating is atomized and sprayed over the electronic assembly. Viscosity, spray settings and masking should be controlled to achieve uniform coverage.
Dip The assembly is immersed into the coating and then withdrawn at a controlled rate. Viscosity and withdrawal speed can affect film thickness and coating uniformity.
Brush Coating is manually applied to specific areas of the assembly. Often useful for smaller production volumes, touch-up and localized application.
Automated / Selective Automated equipment applies coating only to selected areas of the board. Useful for controlled production processes where repeatability and selective coverage are important.

Cure requirements also vary by product. Depending on the chemistry, coatings may cure at room temperature, with heat or through UV exposure. Surface preparation, coating thickness and cure conditions can all affect the final performance of the coating.

Thinners & Supporting Process Materials

Conformal coating thinners are formulated solvent blends used to adjust coating viscosity and application characteristics. The right thinner can help improve flow, leveling and film consistency during the coating process.

Thinners are formulated to work with specific coating chemistries. The recommended thinner should always be used for the coating being applied since solvent compatibility and evaporation rate can affect application behavior and the finished coating.

How Thinners Support the Application Process

The amount of thinner required depends on the coating, application equipment and process conditions. Thinners may be used differently depending on whether the coating is sprayed, dipped or brushed.

Process Role of the Thinner Why It Matters
Spray Application Reduces viscosity to help the coating atomize and flow through spray equipment. Helps support even coverage and a consistent finished film.
Dip Coating Helps maintain the viscosity required for controlled immersion and withdrawal. Viscosity can influence coating thickness, drainage and overall coverage.
Brush Application May be used to adjust flow and make the coating easier to apply manually. Supports smoother application during touch-up or localized coating.
Equipment & Process Control Compatible thinners may also be used to support process consistency and equipment cleaning. Helps maintain a repeatable coating process as solvent conditions change during production.

When Thinners May Be Used

  • Adjusting coating viscosity for spray application
  • Maintaining viscosity during dip coating processes
  • Supporting coating flow and leveling
  • Controlling film thickness
  • Matching the coating to the application equipment and process
  • Supporting consistent processing as solvent evaporates from an open system
  • Cleaning compatible tools, lines or application equipment where recommended

Thinner selection should be based on the specific conformal coating being used. Different coating chemistries require different solvent blends, so substitutions should not be made without confirming compatibility with the coating manufacturer.
